The Drummond's connection - Scotland, Madeira and Azores

I have been always asked about the relationship between the Drummond’s from the Azores Islands and the ones with the same surname in the Madeira Islands. The questioning regarding the connection between the Drummond families in those islands goes far back into the late 1400’s and also involves the Scotland Drummond family.

It is known in the history of the Drummond family from Scotland that John Drummond, son of Sir John Drummond (1419), travelled abroad in the later 1400’s and was never heard back . At the same time frame, Joam “Escorcio” appears in old records from Funchal – Madeira Island for the year of 1470. He is supposedly the link that connects with the Drummond clan from Scotland. Why I say supposedly? We do not have any concrete evidence that points to this assumption other than the family correspondence dating back to the 1500’s and which tries to establish a link between them.

Being genetics helpful in solving brick walls in genealogy, an YDna test on a direct line from a Drummond found in Madeira and another from Azores would shed some light on this matter, bringing confirmation on the genetic link between those families.

If you want to learn a little more about the Drummond in Madeira and Scotland and the letters exchanged between these families, you can found them in two sources at the Internet Archive, as below:

- Malcolm, David. A genealogical memoir of the Most Noble and Ancient House of Drummond. Edinburgh, 1808.

- Drummond, William, 1st Viscount of Strathallan. A genealogical memoir of the Most Noble and Ancient House of Drummond. Edinburgh, 1831.

Family Tree Dna has a group on the Drummond's genetic and the external link is:

Researching in Scotland? Take a look on this website about People of Medieval Scotland:

The book Antroponímia Primitiva da Madeira by Nunes & Kremer - is a relevant study about the names and surnames found in records from the Madeira island archives (XV and XVI). It is an incredible resource for genealogy, history and culture with several bibliographical references. Google books offer a limited view, but worth viewing.

If you are a Drummond descendant and would like to learn more about the Portuguese descendants, you can leave a message below. I will be glad to answer your email. Thank you.

  1. My cousin did extensive genealogy research of our family and found the following: John Drummond V, born about 1390 in Of, Stobhall, Perth, Scotland; married about 1437 in Santa Cruz, Funchal, Ilha da Madeira, Portugal; died between 1460-1470 in Ribeira da Boaventura, Santa Cruz, Madeira, Portugal. I am a descendant from his second wife. He married Branca Afonso da Covilha: born about 1414 in Covilha, Castelo Branco, Portugal; died after 1500 in Ribeira da Boaventura, Santa Cruz, Madeira, Portugal. John Drummond and Branca Afonso da Covilha are my 13th times great grandparents. I am descended from their second child (first daughter) Catarina Annes Escocia (b: between 1440-1445 in Santa Cruz, Funchal, Ilha da Madeira, Portugal). John and Branca had 6 children. Do you have this information? I have more information about the children. from, Denise Matta

  2. Dear Denise, thank you for your kind information. I do have several information on the family from Madeira, although I never had time to organize it, as my main focus right now is Terceira island. The information on the Drummond from Madeira that I have is gathered from many different publications, but no primary record at all, which means, no record from the time (previous to 1600). Did you cousin have primary records from Madeira and the Drummonds of that period time? I am really interest if he did find them. Thank you. Isabella

  4. Is there any information about the Drummonds on Pico Island, Azores? I'm a Historian-Librarian based in the USA, but my father's family has many blue eyed redheads in Pico. It is said that a Scottish clan settled. Duart Castle is mentioned, but I'm not sure if the settlers were the MacLeans (Duart is their historic seat) or another clan entirely. Thanks! Just beginning my research, thought I'd check in. ;)

    1. Hi, the Drummonds have settled mainly in Terceira island, if you are talking about the Azores. Eventually you will find them in other islands. I do not know about the Drummonds in Pico island, but if I come across to any, I will let you know. The connection between the Drummonds from Madeira and those from Azores is not documented. Let me know if you need any help.

    3. Aloha,
I am just over whelmed. I am a Drummondo from Hawaii. I was just curious, really. Basiclly John Drummond came to Hawaii and married a hawaiian wahine (women). He added the o at the end so they would know they are hawaiian decent. Now to find out where John Drummond came from???? I think we have some information. I would have to check my family tree book again. But so very intresting.
      Aloha
